Beautiful, bizzar, bitesize Bolivia will never leave you hungry, thirsty or board.

The highest cities in the world taste good! Potosi is the highest city and La Paz the highest capital in the world. Both reside in Bolivia and all the food to follow is popular in both.

If you are wondering what you should eat and drink in Bolivia, I would say, stomach willing, just try everything! People say everyone gets a bit sick in Bolivia, so if it is a guarantee, you might as well go for it and enjoy the ride.

Where to start? Watch out for festivals and markets, there is always some sort of celebration going on, which usually means extra crazy food.

So, when it comes to savoury, it is mostly fried chicken and potatoes. You typically pay around 5 Bs (50p/ 80c). You can also pick up great empanadas with all kinds of crazy sauce ideas; they are essentially a Mexican Cornish pasty. You can also pick up all kinds of fried fish and meats at these little stalls. The cool think about Bolivia is that you never need to walk more than five minutes to find your meal!

A bit random, but one day we were having a bad day, so splashed out on an entire roast chicken. Yes, an entire roast chicken between two and a much need glass of wine each. Sometimes you just have to do something daft to feel normal again!

Sweet |

Bolivia La Paz local traditional food travel photoThe streets are strewn with sweet treats that stretch the imagination and waste line. If you look closely at the cupcakes, you will see it’s a cupcake on a cupcake. Of course. Everywhere you turn there is a creative take on a desert you will initially mistake to be European. The ice creams are a particular favourite. They look epically impressive, and the venders don’t hold back when it comes to piling on fruit … purple ice cream … jelly … sugar puffs and various sauces. One gargantuan masterpiece between two nearly got the better of us!

Drinks |

Bolivia Potosi local traditional food travel photoDrinks are Bolivia’s time to shine!!! No other country does orange juice like Bolivia. It may sound a silly one to hone in on, but a combination of the quality, frequency and price makes it an absolute favourite for me. On most street corners, for as little as 2 Bs (20p /45c) they slice and squeeze the oranges on the spot. Win.

If oranges aren’t your thing, you can pick pretty much any fruit and most vegetable to be blended into a shake the size of your head. The tropical fruits are so rich here, they really do make for delicious tangy and tasty shakes.

Bolivia does really well on hot drinks too. If you would like a tea that uses the same plant for crack cocaine, then Bolivia is your place. If you would like something a little more internationally legal, you can try their delicious hot chocolate … with a slice of cheese of course.

Api |

Api gets its own category. It is no mistake the Api sounds like happy. It is a delicious hot thick blend of a red berry drink and a white berry drink. The white berry has a lemon zing and the red berry a pinch of cinnamon; absolute hot drink perfection. Api is a popular local drink for in the evenings and is often accompanied with a giant puffed of cheese pastry dashed with icing sugar. The whole thing is an eclectic sensory overload that you must try if ever you make it this tasty corner of the world.
