2. Try bartering
Prices are often fixed but its always worth trying to barter- especially if a place has free rooms later in the day or if you plan to stay more than a few days.
3. Decide if you want to reserve in advance
We did not reserve any of our rooms in advance and always found cheap accommodation. We were travelling in low season and willing to search. Some better known hostels may get busy at times, but there will often be other places nearby. If you want the peace of mind of booking ahead but can’t afford online prices, you can phone ahead to reserve. However, be aware that this is not as secure as booking through websites.
4. Check what the price includes
Prices are generally quoted per room unless you are staying in a dorm. Some places may ask for an additional fee to register your passport. Check if this is included in the room price.
5. Share, share, share
Look for shared rooms (double, triple) because they are generally cheaper per person. If you’re travelling solo see if others want to share with you
6. Try a single room
Some places may allow a couple to share a single room for a lower price. Don’t be put off when people say no. If you’re on a small budget it can happen.
7. Bring repellant or a net
Mosquito nets are rare but often necessary. Bring a travel net or plenty of repellent
8. Go for a fan room
Fan rooms are cheaper than air conditioned rooms. Check the fan is working well and you will save yourself a lot of money. Some places have regular power cuts. You may also want to check if the accommodation has a back up generator.
9. Bring Dollars!
Prices are often quoted in US dollars and you often get a slightly better rate for the room if you pay in US dollars. Check the price in Kyats if you are paying in local currency.
10. Ask about late check out
During low season many hostels are happy to let you check out late for no extra cost if you arrange it in advance.

First Time in Myanmar ??
Myanmar is changing rapidly, so up-to-date blogs (like this one, ahem!) will be a great source. But If it’s you’re first time visiting Myanmar you will probably want to grab a travel guide too. I always think you don’t need more than a ‘Rough Guide‘ as it is about making it your own adventure! They have a pretty cheap kindle copy as well as the actual book.
