Bagan>>     Inle Lake>>    Kalaw>>     Mandalay>>     Hpa An>>    Hsipaw>>      Pyin U Lwin>>     Myawaddy>>

Bagan is an absolute MUST DO in Myanmar. Nyaung U (Pronounced “Noo-wang Oo”) is a great hub to explore the mysterious maze of temples around Bagan and it also offers cheaper accommodation than New Bagan. Nyaung U has plenty of food places, bars and tour agents who can help you rent bikes, book buses and arrange tours. Best budget places to stay in Bagan Myanmar

Because we love you SO much we have flagellated ourselves to find you the BEST BUDGET accommodation in an expensive tourist hotspot. Here they are in order of increasing prices…

Best budget places to stay in Myanmar

Top Pick: Sa Bai Myaing, Jasmine Villa

Directions: Walk west along Lanmadaw 3 road away from the roundabouts. Sa Bai Myaing is on the right, about 300m from the roundabouts.

Although this place is wonderfully basic, the bedding and bathrooms are clean. It is also the cheapest place we were able to find in the Bagan area. It is worth noting that they do not accept US$ here (this is rare in Myanmar, where most places are very happy to take your dollars!)

A double fan room costs 13,000Ks (equivalent to around $11 or £15) with a shared bathroom and warm water.

A solo traveller can get a room for 8,000Ks (equivalent to around $7 or £5)

The great news is that the price does not change in high season.

Free wifi and breakfast are included in the cost. They are also very happy to help booking buses.

Pyinsa Rupa

Rooms can be reserved in advance by phone: 09 402 767725 / 09 402 501350

Directions: Walk west along Lanmadaw 3 road away from the roundabouts. Pyinsa Rupa is on the right, about 0.5km from the roundabouts.

In low season a twin room with shared bathroom and fan costs 14,400Ks ($12 or £8.50) and the same room costs 21,600Ks ($18 or £13) in high season (the picture below to the left).

Note that the cheapest rooms vary a lot in how nice they are so ask to see a few if they have some available. The cheapest rooms for a solo traveler cost 9,600Ks ($8 or £6) in low season and 12,000 ($10 or £7) in high season.

There are also A.C. rooms available for19,200Ks ($16 or £11) and 24,000Ks ($20 or £14) in low season (the picture to the right).

Directions: Walk west along Lanmadaw 3 road away from the roundabouts. May Kha Lar is on the right, about 0.5km from the roundabouts. It is a little further from the roundabouts than Pyinsa Rupa.

This place is more expensive here than Sa Bai Myaing Jasmine Villa and Pyinsa Rupa, however it is conveniently close to both and would be a great back up if other places in the area are fully booked. At present they only have twin rooms available (no double beds).

19,200Ks ($16 or £11) for an air conditioned room with shared bathroom or 21,600Ks ($18 or £13) in high season

24,000Ks ($20 or £14) for air conditioning and en suite room (private bathroom) and 27,600Ks ($23 or £16) for high season

This hostel has a great vibe and can be very busy even in low season. If you want to stay here it is recommended that you book early. There is a big range of rooms here:

Dorm beds cost 10,800Ks ($9 or £6)

A solo traveller can take a private room with shared bathroom for 15,600Ks ($13 or £9)

A double A.C. room with shared bathroom costs 21,600Ks ($18 or £13)

A private double room with A.C. and private bathroom costs 26,400Ks ($22 or £16) -these rooms are very nice!

In high season prices increase by $2 for cheaper rooms and as much as $8 for expensive rooms

Note on currency:

The price is US$ is normally fixed and the price in the local currency (Kyats) may vary if the exchange rate changes. I have shown the price in GBP as a very approximate guide to help British folks understand the cost.

Prefer not to risk it ?

As we mentioned in the other blogs, the only time it might get tricky is if you’re going in the high season. We have included the phone numbers and email address where possible to help you book. BUT, if you don’t want to risk it and can stretch your budget there are some great places to stay on this section of Agoda

First Time in Myanmar ??

Myanmar is changing rapidly, so up-to-date blogs (like this one, ahem!) will be a great source.  But If it’s you’re first time visiting Myanmar you will probably want to grab a travel guide too. I always think you don’t need more than a Rough Guide‘ as it is about making it your own adventure! They have a pretty cheap kindle copy as well as the actual book.

For me Sa Ba Myaing Guest House Jasmine Villa was the worst guesthouse I’ve ever been. We just stayed there one night as we changed to another one for a few more bucks but much better.

But thank you for the information, for other places was good!

Hi Adrian, sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Jasmine Villa was really basic – still fondly remember the cold showers 🙂 We did this blog because we kept talking to travellers who said that all the accommodation in Myanmar is really expensive – so we did loads of walking to find out the cheapest you can get. The guest houses we feature in this blog really are the absolute cheapest we could find in town for backpackers on a shoe string budget. Anyway happy travels Adrian, I hope you enjoy Myanmar. Pete
