How long will it take to get to Dee Doke?
A full day trip is recommended: The journey to DEE DOKE will take around 2 hours by motor bike from Pyin U Lwin depending which route you take. You will probably want to spend a few hours at the waterfall and then take the 2 hour journey home. You can also travel to these waterfalls from Mandalay.
Which is best? Travelling from Mandalay or Pyin Oo Lwin?
The journey to Dee Doke from Pyin Oo Lwin is around 60km. The journey to Dee Doke from Mandalay is around 50km. However, bike rental in Mandalay is more expensive and the route is more complicated because Mandalay is a big city. There is also the RISK of driving through a big busy city to consider when you are planning your adventure. How do I find Dee Doke waterfalls from Pyin Oo Lwin?
If you are comfortable renting and riding a motorbike it is the easiest and cheapest way to get to Dee Doke. One route is safer but less sceneic. The other route has a steep gravel covered road and is more scenic.

Route 1 The safer but less scenic route
- Drive about 40km along the Mandalay-Lashio main road in the southwest direction towards Mandalay (this will take around 1 hour 20 minutes
- Turn left at this junction
- Follow the road for around 45 minutes
- The entrance to Dee Doke will be on your left
Route 2 The challenging and scenic route
If you fancy and adventure and a challenge this route is a similar distance but is more scenic. The steep gravel covered road is only recommended for more experienced riders.
- Drive approximately 22km along the Mandalay-Lashio main road southwest towards Mandalay (this will take around 40 minutes)
- Watch out for this point, this is where you will need to carefully cross to the other side of the road and keep going being very careful of oncoming traffic. There are shops and cafes on the other side. You will be able to progress slowly down the road against the on coming traffic (in the same direction you were travelling before)
- Turn left at this junction and just follow the road. Don’t turn off.
- Follow the road for around 1 hour (a few smaller roads fork off to the right- ignore these roads) Be careful- the road becomes steep and is covered in loose gravel
- You will eventually get to this t-junction. Turn right here.
- Follow the road for around 20 minutes. The entrance to Dee Doke will be on your right.
When you arrive at the entrance you can park in the area. If you drive a short way up the road cafes will be eager for you to park next to them in the hope that you will also buy a drink from them. For your return trip back to Pyin Oo Lwin you may consider returning on the other safer route to avoid your bike over heating on the steep hill (this is especially wise if you are sharing a bike with someone else).
What can I do at Dee Doke waterfalls?
Relax, swim, enjoy the atmosphere and don’t forget to take a selfie! You will see locals renting inflatables and selling drinks. There are pools near the bottom of the valley but they are not as nice as the pools further up the valley. You will then need to walk up the valley for 20-30 minutes. There are many small paths leading up the valley. However, if you take a right up the hill not far from the entrance you will follow a path that leads all the way to the top pools- this is probably the most straightforward route to the top of the valley.
What does it cost to go to Dee Doke waterfalls?
At present there is no entrance fee. An inflatable ring will cost around 1,000Ks (around $1 or 70 pence) and soft drinks cost 500Ks-1,000Ks (around 50cents-$1 or 30-60 pence)
What should I bring to Dee Doke waterfalls?
There are many little paths leading up the valley. At some points you may need to climb these quirky wooden ladders depending which route you walk. Bring suitable footwear (trainers rather than flip flops) because some of the paths are quite adventurous.
Other things to bring:
- Swimming stuff
- A towel
- Good shoes
- sunscreen
- insect repellant
- A large bottle of water
- Don’t forget your camera!

Yay! Thank you so much Erika, I am super stoked you are finding it useful! When we were there it was such an unknown place we didn;t see any offers of guides to this place. If you are confident on a bike, it is pretty exhilarating to make your own way there. The first route would help a bit if you come from Mandalay, just look out for the garage in the photo. Also we have pinned it as carefully on the map as we can, so you could just use maps me and the pin to find it. If you find a tour guide for this place, could you please let us know the details? Thanks for this blog, really helpful! We went here today (and to Anisakan falls). Was great, although the water was not nearly as blue as in your pictures. I guess because of recent rainfall, and its the rainy season. However we had a very refreshing dip! Can still definetely recommend going here.

Yay! go you guys! It’s not the easiest journey. You’re right, rainfall and the sky being overcast will affect it. I’m curious though, did you go all the way to the top one? The ones at the bottom were gray/green when we were there, but definitely became a more stunning blue colour as we hiked up.
